Product Description Reiki is an ancient and profoundly simple system of laying on of hands healing derived from Tibetan Buddhism. In the West, Reiki has been kept highly secret for many years. ESSENTIAL REIKI presents full information on all three degrees of this healing system, most of it in print for the first time. Teaching from the perspective that Reiki healing belongs to all people, Diane Stein breaks new ground in her classic guide to this ancient practice. While no book can replace the directly received Reiki attunements, ESSENTIAL REIKI provides everything else that the healer, practitioner, and teacher of this system needs.

Very Thorough and sticks to origin of Reiki September 5, 2010 Michelle Y. Dunson (NY, NY) I think this is a very thorough and simple book for beginners and the experienced.
Essential Reiki July 1, 2010 Shaman3 This guide is progressive while giving due respect to traditional Reiki teachings. It is written from a female perspective, but I didn't find it too distracting. I now give this book to all my Reiki students.
OK for what it is. June 23, 2010 R. Dennis (U.S.A.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you have nothing else, this book will do OK. I feel Diane's symbols are what she wants them to be, but other versions are closer to what Master/Teacher Dr. Usui taught. The best way to get your symbols are from your Master/Teacher during your teaching and attunement process.
If you weren't given symbols, this book is helpful. Some Reiki Masters in the 1980's did the attunments but did not give the symbols. Besides giving her version of the symbols, I found the book to be more about Diane Stein's journey into Reiki and less about Reiki it's self. Diane instructs how to give attunements in groups, ten to twenty at a time did not seem like a sacred tradition, but more like an assembly line. This is also her version of the attunement process. I thought she ventured into other area's at times and away from the subject of Reiki.
I struggled to get past all of the writers (Diane Stein) personal feelings and to learn about Reiki from this book. Almost every other Reiki book I have read was so much easier to follow, and when I used instructions by William Rand and Frank Petter, my Reiki was so much easier and more to the point, very strong and effective energy. There are Reiki masters out there that have went to Japan and studied the Usui Reiki. They are also continuing to study Reiki and find so many uses for Reiki energy. I enjoy Frank Petter and especially William Rand's writing and knowledge.
Great Reiki manual May 26, 2010 Rose Tyler WHO? (Maryland) This is an excellent manual for the beginner. Detailed illustrations are included. A great resource!
Got Symbols? Reiki revealed... May 26, 2010 M. Palmer (Los Angeles, CA) This book is truly a guide to discovering and understanding an otherwise perplexing specialty. Reiki is ancient, seasoned, secretive (until this novel) and earned and this book allows interested parties to LEARN Reiki. Diane's guide doesn't suppress this beautiful art and gives the gift of knowledge to those who are open enough to receive it. The specialty of Reiki can be up to a 25% markup on regular MT services and as such can be of sincere healthy profit to its Masters and practitioners according to The Magic Touch: How to make $100,000 per year as a massage Therapist by Meagan R. Holub. "The magic Touch:.." is a great guide on how to turn a regular, unremarkable career into a truly successful one. Meagan's book houses sections on intuition, mind and body relaxation and emotional health. Buy these two books together for a true guide to success in this niche.
