Amazon.com Review
The first edition of this workbook is regarded as a classic in its field, and was the first book to introduce trigger point therapy to the general public as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, muscle ache, and repetitive strain injuries. As the author makes clear, all such conditions are related to lack of oxygen in exhausted or injured muscle tissue. Trigger point therapy has been used for decades by doctors, pain specialists, and massage therapists to quickly stimulate the flow of oxygen and promote rapid pain reduction. This book makes the same techniques available to the general public with instructions that are easy to follow, and abetted by an extensive collection of charts and corresponding illustrations.

The author’s interest in trigger point therapy began when he used it to successfully treat his frozen shoulder. Since that time, he has dedicated himself to teaching others the same techniques. That dedication is obvious throughout his writing and the care he takes to make the therapy understandable to the lay public. Also included in this new edition is updated information that should be of great interest to pain specialists and bodyworkers, as well as useful instruction in a variety of relaxation techniques. Overall, this book is an excellent self-care resource for anyone interested in pain relief.--Larry Trivieri Jr.

Product Description
Trigger point therapy is one of the most intriguing and fastest-growing bodywork styles in the world. Medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists are all beginning to use this technique to relieve formerly undiagnosable muscle and joint pain—conditions that studies have shown to be the cause of nearly 25 percent of all doctor visits. The technique involves applying short, repeated massage strokes to trigger points, tiny contraction knots in muscle tissue where restricted circulation and lack of oxygen cause referred pain. Trigger points create pain throughout the body in predictable patterns characteristic to each muscle, producing discomfort ranging from mild to severe. Trigger point massage increases circulation and oxygenation in the area and often produces instant relief. This dynamic technique has made a huge impact among health professionals and the public alike, becoming an overnight classic in the field of pain relief. The book has sold over 220,000 copies since the release of the first edition in 2001. The second edition is a complete update and includes a new chapter specifically for massage professionals, as well as a chapter on systematic muscle relaxation techniques that can reinforce the therapeutic power of trigger point work.

5 out of 5 stars The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook   July 26, 2010
Peter Ietto
Help Yourself, I challenge you, for your benifit because it`s so easy to give up on your pains (when others have tried to help). Just read the introduction and faith will begin to grow.
No-one knows your pain like you do, you will learn where it is coming from and how to stop it, then if it returns you will know how to stop it before it becomes unbearable again. This book will teach you what other professionals don`t know (The Guys You`ve Been To Already) I have already purchased another book for another colleague and he is using these methods in his practice, with success, pain relief and healing is what you crave and you`ll find it in this book, you will learn fantastic health maintenance with simple methods from your own hands.

5 out of 5 stars Don't know what I would do without this book!   July 24, 2010

I bought this book last summer (2009), and it has changed my life. I was unable to type on the computer without a brace--this had been going on for three years. I went to the doctor and they said I would have to wait till it got worse before they would talk options. I had constant arm pain and back throbbing. I could not read books I had to hold, carry bags while shopping, or drive long distances. After pouring over the book, and beginning with the area that hurt the most, I can honestly say that after 2 months of treating myself 3 times a day, I stopped using the brace for good! Currently I use the techniques every day that I work consistently on the computer, and rarely when I am on vacation or have light computer days. It is more maintenance however, and does not take more than 10 minutes. I also set up my workstation for ergonomics and refused to type at workstations with improper equipment. Before I got this book and started dedicating time every day to my trigger points, I was becoming depressed that I would have to live with this chronic pain for the rest of my life. I was tired of making excuses for myself. If you are willing to put in time every day, you will see results!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant   July 22, 2010

As a bodyworker, I have recommended this book more than any other to clients. Trigger points may not be the problem for you, but I have had clients that have tried everything else, and are worried they will be in pain forever, and for many of them this has been a godsend in terms of pain relief. About two years ago my mother, who has always been very active, started having knee pain and lower back pain, she did yoga, and went to doctors, she did chiropractic, acupuncture and went to specialists, no one could make her pain go away. Many of the techniques helped, but never to the point where she felt normal. It was frustrating as a deep tissue massage therapist to not be able to help her or point her even in the right direction. Finally I came across trigger point therapy. We did a afternoon of work together, and I left her with this book and she called me up the next day and was overjoyed. She had been able to sleep through the night, and felt much less pain. The most important thing was she felt the best she had felt in a year, she felt hope- that maybe there was a solution, after a year of undiagnosable or treatable pain, that there was a way out. The self trigger point massage, some stretches and a rearrangement of her workspace gave her life back to her in 3 weeks. She still does the daily massage treatments, and stretches and has to watch her work area set up, but she is pretty well pain-free today, in large part to the techniques she learned from this book. This book has been a priceless gift for my family.

Since then I have come across a handful of clients with chronic untreatable pain, constant migraines, chronic leg and back pain, tmj etc. sometimes this pain has gotten to the point where doctors think that the pain is mental. It maybe true in some cases, but it seems that is the conclusion when doctors don't know what to do, and don't have other tools at their disposal. Keep looking for a way out, chronic pain sufferers! When I have some across a good deal of chronic pain sufferers, this book is my first recommendation to them. This is not always the solution, or the reason for the pain in everyone, however it is something to explore. When you have had pain, and are troubleshooting a solution, this is a very good resource.

Helpful Tools:
The Knobble II by the Pressure Positive Company, Sapphire Blue is a great tool- and portable and easy to use. I would recommend for self care having on hand 2 tennis balls and a racket ball, and the knobble. For those who want more the Thera Cane Massager or Body Back Buddy and travel size version of THE STICK MARATHON STICK BODY MUSCLE MASSAGER SG-2000 are helpful as well.

word to the wise: Remember to ice after treatment- ALWAYS!

5 out of 5 stars I take this book everywhere   June 28, 2010

I have never written a review before, never wanted to; but this book is so good, so important, and I just wanted to encourage anyone out there at all interested in avoiding surgery and make themselves feel better, to just buy it. I started with a book on Acupressure, (easier to read, but nowhere near as comprehensive)I found this book somehow and it is now dogeared from use. I take it on overseas trips, even though it is a danged heavy book. Horrible neck aches, chronic hip pain, small of the back, you name it, I've been able to fix it. I'm actually online to get a copy for my son right now...

I bought this book because I saw the reviews on Amazon and I was having recurring pain in my shoulder. I could actually feel the muscle knotting up right under my shoulder blade and while my pain was not debilitating, it was distracting and would sometimes interrupt my sleep. This was a cheap book and reviews were good, so I thought to myself, what the heck. I also bought the back buddy and followed instructions for working on the trigger points along the shoulder blade and the pain eventually went away. However, it does periodically come back 2-3 times a year. (Seems to be either stress related or due to my job sitting at a desk all day). When this happens,I just repeat the process.

Later I started working out and part of my program consisted of going on a diet. Within a week, I started getting a nasty headache at the base of my skull. The problem was this headache kept coming back and hanging around for about three weeks. Initially, I thought it was due to the diet (low carb). I also noticed that during my workouts I started to have pain in my shoulder again. I started to massage my shoulder again with the back buddy and boy was it painful. Significantly more painful than normal. Because of this, I pulled this book of the shelf and re-read the information on my problem, and I saw the base of the skull was a location for referred pain. I could not believe it! I started aggressive treatment on it and w/in 2 days the headaches were drastically reduced. (I used a lacrosse ball against a wall) W/in 5 days they were almost gone. W/in a week all gone. Now to be honest, I think it was pure luck that I found out that there was a relationship between my headache and my shoulder pain but sometimes you make your own luck. I keep thinking if this headache kept hanging around I would have eventually headed to the Dr. and he would have found out squat!! I would have wasted time and money on something easily solved by self-massage.

Now I don't think it this book is the be-all and end-all to pain, but in life you have to take chances. Sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss. In my case this book is worth the read and I am glad it is on my bookshelf.
